National Native American Heritage Month

November is National Native American Heritage Month.  It is a time to celebrate the traditions, languages and stories of Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and affiliated Island communities and ensure their rich histories and contributions continue to thrive with each passing generation.  This year's theme at the Department of Interior is Celebrating Tribal Sovereignty and Identity.  Tribal sovereignty ensures that any decisions about Tribes with regard to their property and citizens are made with their participation and consent.

Historically, Native Americans were the first to share the cultivation of corn with the world.  They also created syringes, mouthwash, sunscreen, oral contraceptives, kayaks, snow goggles and many more useful inventions.  Notable members include the legendary athlete Jim Thorpe and the hundreds of Navajo Code Talkers who provided vital communication advantages during World War II.

These contributions continue.  As of last year, there were 574 Federally Recognized Tribes in the United States, with at least 167 distinct tongues.  Native Americans, who come from all walks of life, totaled more than 5 million American citizens.  They enjoy the proud distinction of serving in the United States Armed Forces at higher rates than any other ethnic group.

Cipriani & Werner joins in recognizing their contributions and wishes all a happy Native American History Month!
