During the month of March, we recognize National Women’s History Month and honor the contributions and achievements of women throughout history. Women’s History Month started as Women’s History Week in 1978 when the Sonoma County Commission on the Status of Women organized a week-long celebration. The movement continued to spread across the country and led by the National Women’s History Project (now the National Women's History Alliance) successfully lobbied for national recognition. In 1980, the first presidential proclamation was issued declaring the first National Women’s History Week. In 1987, Congress passed Public Law 100-9, designating March as “National Women’s History Month”. The National Women’s History Alliance selects a yearly theme. This year’s theme is “Moving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations.”
We are all aware of women throughout history who have been recognized for their meaningful contributions and accomplishments. More importantly, we all know women in our families, communities, and workplaces who, while not always formally recognized, have had and continue to have a positive influence and impact on us and others. As we join in the recognition and celebration of this month in honor of all women, may we embrace the spirit and effort of this year’s theme by continuing our commitment to Moving Forward Together!
