October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month

National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) is celebrated annually in October to recognize the contributions of people with disabilities to the workforce and our economy.  The month-long focus is additionally purposed to raise awareness of disability employment issues, as well as promote inclusive practices and culture in the workplace.

The origins of this recognition date back to 1945 when Congress established the first week of October as National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week.  Subsequently, in 1962, the word “physically” was removed to acknowledge the employment needs of people with all types of disabilities.  Later in 1988, the week was expanded to a month and the name was changed to "National Disability Employment Awareness Month."

As we celebrate the value and talent that workers with disabilities add to America’s workplaces and economy, may we be reminded that every month of every year is an opportunity for each of us to contribute to the enhancement of an inclusive work environment in our workspaces.
