Robert A. Lockhart is a partner in the firm's Charleston office.  With over 30 years of litigation experience, he concentrates his practice in insurance defense including construction, motor carrier/motor vehicle, premises liability and insurance coverage/bad faith matters.

Earlier in his career, Mr. Lockhart practiced with two of the largest defense firms in West Virginia, where he represented a diversity of clients on matters ranging from labor and employment disputes and workplace injuries to mine safety and environmental issues. Since then, he has been retained by a number of regional and national insurance carriers to represent clients in the trucking, construction, grocery, banking, restaurant and other industries.

Mr. Lockhart has advised insurers regarding coverage issues arising under a variety of policies, and has filed and defended coverage actions involving auto, homeowners, environmental and commercial liability.  He has also defended claims for extra-contractual liability.

Mr. Lockhart has been selected by his peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America© annually since 2016 in the practice area of Litigation - Insurance.

He is a member of the Transportation Lawyers Association, Claims and Litigation Management Alliance, Defense Research Institute, Kanawha County Bar Association and Defense Trial Counsel of West Virginia.

Mr. Lockhart is admitted to practice before all West Virginia state courts, as well as the U.S. District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of West Virginia and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. 

He received his B.A. from West Virginia University in 1978 and his J.D. from West Virginia University College of Law in 1987.  He also received a M.S. in Industrial Relations/Human Resources from West Virginia College of Graduate Studies in 1984.
